When you have asthma, there are a lot of aspects of everyday life that can trigger your attacks. What may seem perfectly innocuous to others could be downright painful, and even deadly to you. However, it’s not impossible to protect yourself. Here are five helpful tips for preventing asthma attacks.

  1. Be sure to use hypoallergenic sheets and pillow covers. One of the most effective ways to avoid asthma attacks is to be sure that you are not spending all night breathingin allergenic linens. There are all kinds of pillow covers and linens you can buy which are hypoallergenic so that you are not inhaling allergens while you sleep. Once you make the switch, you will notice that you not only sleep better at night, but you will have far less attacks in the morning.
  2. Make a concerted effort to reduce mold in the household. When you are taking showers or baths, you want to make sure that you are always running your vent. In fact, you want to keep it running for about an hour afterwards as well. It’s important to reduce moisture in the home as much as possible so that you can avoid the proliferation of mold. If you live in a particularly warm climate, you may want to get yourself a dehumidifier, just to be sure that you keep your house free of mold.
  3. Keep your distance from smokers and exhaust from fossil fuels. One of the worst kinds of asthma attack is that which is caused by smoke inhalation. Whether it be smoke from cigarettes or exhaust from cars, lawnmowers, and other machines that are powered by fossil fuels, the toxicity that you inhale could trigger a really nasty attack. That’s why you want to keep your distance as much as possible, or even hold your breath as you walk by smokers, large trucks, and tractors.
  4. Avoid using harsh cleaning chemicals. Harsh cleaning chemicals, and even different types of fragrances from perfume and candles can often be villainous to asthmatic lungs. That’s why you want to be sure to buy cleaning solutions that are mild and unscented whenever possible. When you do clean, it’s important to always wear a mask so that you can reduce the amount of fumes that you inhale. You can combat these attacks a bit more naturally with asthma medicines from companies like NutriChem, but your first step should be prevention rather than treatment.
  5. Keep pets off of bedding and upholstered furniture. Unfortunately, as much as we all love cuddling with our pets, their fur and dander can really do a number on someone with asthma. Cats can be very difficult to discipline, but it can be done with things like water guns and cans of high-pressured air. Whatever you need to do, be sure to train your pets to stay off of bedding and upholstered items, otherwise, it will be you who has to stay away from these areas of the house.
